For those whose whole lives had revolved around the war, it came as a great shock. But for the children of such soldiers, it was a time to finally grasp for childhood.
The meadows surrounding Balteghurst, as was happening elsewhere in other cities and towns, became a mock-battleground for hordes of fierce wild children, each day making and breaking alliances in the endless battle for territory: perhaps an old dead tree, a decrepit hut, or a verdant fishing spot by the river.
